Skana Hull Re-Finish Pt 2

In the last post I began with a description of the hull refinish on my own CS 36 sailboat. The boat had sustained severe surface damage on the starboard hull topsides. Not only was the gel coat damaged but in areas the fiberglass laminate was damaged as well.

A decision was made to re gel coat the entire hull as opposed to a polyurethane painted coating.

To begin with the hull was cleaned with a solvent was remover and all surfaces were machine sanded with 120 Grit paper. The damaged areas were repaired using a combination of fiberglass laminate and gel coat. The repairs were also finished to a 120 grit surface.

The picture below shows the initial sanding.

The hull was then cleaned again and sprayed with a of gel coat specially formulated for over coating which was pigmented to the correct shade of white. Sprayed gel coat leaves a rough “orange peel” type of surface which must then be sanded and the polished out to achieve the desired surface gloss. This is where the procedure differs from a painted finish. Paint dries to a glossy finish and does not require the sanding and polishing that gel coat does. The gel was taken down to about 50mm below the original waterline and after the final polishing was brought back up to its original location.

The hull was then wet sanded with various grits of sandpaper ranging from 400 to 800 grit paper. This leaves the surface very smooth but with a dull gloss.

At this point the entire hull must be machine polished using a fine rubbing compound and a hand held polisher and a fine wool pad.

The final step after the vinyl graphics are applied is a couple of coats of a hard wax.

Here is a picture of the finished product. It shows a great glossy finish and looks in new condition. The vinyl graphics have yet to be applied.

The boat is now back home at the Whitby Yacht Club, hauled and on the cradle for the winter. I’ve had nothing but positive comments about the finish.
